Evonik operates globally in the field of specialty chemicals. Within this, the Coating Additives business line has created the COATINO® Campus – a platform dedicated to sharing knowledge and information about products, their applications, and essential background knowledge.

The 60-minute course is designed for both Evonik employees and customers who wish to gain the necessary foundational knowledge to ensure the optimal use of Evonik products. Participants from across the globe – both internal and external – are invited to take part in this training.

The starting position

This training involved a wealth of foundational information – including graphs, formulas, and physical or chemical principles.The goal was to combine this content with product-specific information on Evonik additives, tailored for both employees and customers around the world. The topic of rheology was to be presented in an engaging and accessible way to spark interest.

The approach

Since the introduction to rheology requires extensive background information – including definitions, formulas, graphs, diagrams, and tables – learners are provided with a digital encyclopaedia, the “Rheopedia”, which they can access at any time during the training.

Learners can easily navigate back and forth between the training content and the background information in the encyclopaedia.

To bridge the gap between theory, fundamentals and practical application, a more personal and playful approach was chosen: a character named Prof. Fluido anticipates learners’ questions and presents content following the Rheopedia concept. This support can be accessed by learners on demand.

The implementation

A teaser video introduces the topic and invites users to explore the fascinating world of rheology in more depth.

The e-learning course uses a vivid mix of real-life imagery – including scenes from the laboratory – as well as illustrations and graphics. A variety of interactive elements, animations and short video clips ensure an engaging and dynamic learning experience.

The topic of rheology is introduced with an emotional teaser video. During a breakfast scene, familiar substances begin to flow – illustrating, in a playful yet striking way, how flow behaviour can also be influenced when it comes to coatings or paints. A simplified animation helps convey this concept.

In the e-learning module, learners are invited to follow the 'flow'. Scientific fundamentals of flow behaviour are introduced step by step, forming the basis for practical applications of Evonik’s additives.

Interactive exercises throughout the course help to deepen understanding of the topic.

Test methods are described to assess – or at least estimate – the flow behaviour of specific coating materials.

Molecular details are illustrated, animated, and clearly explained, providing learners with valuable insight into how the additives work.

The reference tool ‘Rheopedia’ is accessible at any time, allowing learners to revisit background information whenever needed.
